Project Description
GSA designed and conducted a multiple-scale hydrogeologic testing and characterization program to improve copper leach operations. The characterization program focused on determining solution and air flow characteristics under active leach and rest periods establishing monitoring systems for solution, air, temperature and gas flow, and developing an in-situ monitoring system. To determine the presence of anoxic and/or saturated conditions, piezometers were installed to allow both automated and manual monitoring of phreatic surface levels, oxygen concentration in pore space, and temperature within the heaps. Monitoring protocols were provided to train on-site personnel on data collection. Customized equipment was constructed and provided to the client to facilitate measurements.
Project Highlights
- Field and laboratory hydraulic property characterization
- In-situ monitoring of heap leach environmental conditions
- Phreatic surface, oxygen, and temperature monitoring
