Buckman Diversion Habitat Mitigation
Location
Santa Fe National Forest
New Mexico
Client
City of Santa Fe Water Resources Division
Project Description
The City of Santa Fe receives approximately 33% of its municipal water supply through a Rio Grande surface water diversion known as the Buckman Direct Diversion Project. The diversion was constructed in a remote portion of the Rio Grande administered by the Santa Fe National Forest. The Record of Decision associated with the project EIS dictated that functional habitat losses to riparian, upland and wetland habitats be mitigated.
GSA project managers and restoration scientists were retained to perform all aspects of the habitat mitigation program, including performing baseline ecological functional assessments, designing restoration treatments, developing restoration plans and specifications, managing construction contractors, designing and performing effectiveness monitoring, and coordinating with federal agencies, livestock associations, and volunteer groups.
